After school,

Nina runs up to me

in the bus line.

She’s wearing a gold

plastic medal

around her neck.

“Where were you, Birdie?

Martin and I were worried.”

Martin and I.

The words prick

my heart.

Martin was my friend first.

Nina points to her medal.

“Red team won!”

“Big whoop,” I say.

Nina gives me a look.

“I was sick

in the nurse’s office

all day,” I explain.

Nina drapes her arm

around me.

“Oh Birdie, I’m sorry.

Are you okay now?”

I shrug.

“Well,” she says,

“You’re still a red teamer.”

She whips out another

gold medal.

“Martin and I made sure

to get one for you.”
